The Festival The ancient Celtic festival of Lughnasa or Lughnasadh marks the end of Summer and the coming of the harvest. It is a joyful occasion the pagan Celts celebrated with feasting, fire, dance, song and games. Historically, it was celebrated throughout Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man. The festival lasted a month with August 1st falling in the middle, but when the Gregorian system was adopted in Ireland in 1782, 11 days had to be dropped to make the calendar astronomically correct.
